LAKE HOUSE RETREAT

Architect: RS MANNINO Architecture

Project Location: Hudson Valley, New York

The rustic simplicity of this lake house weekend retreat is achieved with thoughtful architectural composition, an efficient construction process and durable/sustainable material selections. The overall footprint and open floor plan flow create a connection to the surrounding natural landscape. The standing seam black metal facade and roof angle pitch, along with the horizontal lines of the board form concrete foundation add texture and give the home its modern silhouette. To balance the home’s dark form, warm cedar wood siding is carried through the interior vaulted ceilings and primary bedroom’s accent wall to complement the natural surroundings.

Set on a five-acre property on the shoreline of a lake in New York's Hudson Valley, this vacation retreat was a family legacy for generations of nature lovers. The client wanted the house to evoke a simple yet modern architectural character and take advantage of the spectacular lakeside views. Rooms facing the water allow for natural light to flood the living areas from the lakeside to the terrain side. The utilitarian interior architecture is defined by the 15 foot high glass windows offering maximum exposure to the lake views.

There are two levels at grade: as you approach the driveway as well as access from the lake: the sunken primary bedroom leads out to a deep covered intimate outdoor space for private lounging to soak up the natural environment.

On the other side, a living room with a floating wood-burning fireplace completes the weekend country vibe. In addition, this floor also includes the kitchen and dining area, and a second bathroom.

While the house is immersed in nature and offers an incredible spot for birdwatching, it’s also set back slightly, so it's safe and protected from any potential rising water. Outside, there’s a deck area that leads to a sitting area around an outdoor fire pit that overlooks the boat dock.

Everything else on the property is really untouched as we attempted to minimize the disturbance on the property as much as possible.
